Saving Remington Woods, a 422-acre forest in Bridgeport and Stratford, has been a Sierra Club project for close to 20 years, but right now might be the most important time to get involved in saving this treasure. The environmental clean up of Remington Woods is expected to be completed around the end of 2020. The pollution from its industrial past as the site of the Remington Arms company includes lead, PCBs, live munitions, and other hazards. Once cleaned up, its fate will be determined

 

We seek to protect and preserve Remington Woods in its entirety for the enjoyment of the residents of the communities with walking paths and access to nature. Urban trees provide a myriad of benefits. In a 2007 study conducted by the City of Hartford, it was found that the city’s 450,000 trees, covering 26% of the city, removed 2,400 tons of carbon and 73 tons of other pollutants, including 37 tons of particulate matter, per year. The cooling provided by the trees was estimated to reduce energy use by 1,800 megawatt hours per year.

 

Much like the benefits of urban trees, we have a myriad of ways you can help in our efforts!

• Sign the petition to Save Remington Woods. Our petition will go to various boards and offices in Bridgeport and Stratford, and we need as many signatures as possible. Share the petition - especially with people you know who live in Bridgeport and Stratford.

• Volunteer. Let us know if you would like to volunteer for this important effort. Whatever your skill is, we need it!

• Tell people. Many people are very surprised to hear there is a forest in Bridgeport, our most populous city! Share our Facebook page: Save Remington Woods and website: SaveRemingtonWoods.org

• Help us spread the word. Identify community events in Bridgeport and Stratford where we can table, or share information. If you know of an upcoming event, let us know!
