RE: Nuclear Weapons and the Biden Administration
“A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.” Presidents Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, 1985
"Today, every inhabitant of this planet must contemplate the day when this planet may no longer be habitable. Every man, woman and child live under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident or miscalculation or by madness. The weapons of war must be abolished before they abolish us.”
President John F. Kennedy, September 25, 1961
“I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway in the hell of nuclear annihilation.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 1964
Dear Mr. President:
History finds us at the most dangerous nexus since World War II. Nuclear weapons pose an existential threat to human civilization and to most life on Earth. Nuclear weapons have proliferated, and now the United States, Russia and other nuclear armed states have renewed the nuclear arms race.
“The spread of nuclear weapons is the greatest threat facing the county and, I would argue, facing humanity. And that is why we are working both to stop their proliferation and eventually eliminate them.”
Vice-President Joseph Biden, February 17, 2010
We agree wholeheartedly with your February 17, 2010 statement and urge you to make the necessary and heroic decisions that will decrease the risk of nuclear catastrophe.

Sierra Club endorses Back from the Brink call to Prevent Nuclear War:
We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:
* renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first;
* ending the sole, unchecked authority of any US president to launch a nuclear attack;
* taking US nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert;
* cancelling the plan to replace the entire US nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons; and
* actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.

Position endorsed Aug. 13, 2019 by National Program co-leads Ramon Cruz and Debbie Sease

As Albert Einstein frequently warned, “We will either eliminate nuclear weapons or they will eliminate us.” Without your bold and decisive choices leading away from the new nuclear arms race, the world will face many more decades of nuclear peril, which we have avoided thus far with blind luck as much as with statesmanship.
Sierra Club has for many years opposed the development, testing, manufacture, use, and re-engineering of nuclear weapons. To list the most polluted places on Earth is to list the sites where nuclear weapons have been produced, including Hanford, Washington, Savannah River Site in South Carolina, and Rocky Flats, Colorado, to name only a very few. The legacy cost of managing hundreds of these nuclear weapons sites contaminated by radionuclides, according to the Government Accounting Office, is over $1 Trillion. We agree with you that the United States can ill-afford to waste even more resources for nuclear weapons; weapons which, in the end, will be abolished or will end life on Earth.
Respectfully yours,
