The link between being outdoors and health is well documented. Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors program focuses on bringing folks from the military community into nature to enjoy its benefits.
We brought the Sierra Club Military Outdoors program to the Connecticut Chapter two years ago, and we are excited that we have gained support since. We envision this program to be a mutually beneficial partnership between the Chapter and the veteran, active military, and military family communities. The main focus of this program is holding outings for the military community and families here in Connecticut. These outings are held by veterans and for veterans. Our hope is that we are creating a safe, inclusive, and mindful environment for those who protect our country and our freedom.
Over the summer, Military Outdoors outings leader, Savana Jones co-led a yoga series in Bushnell park. In the months of September and October we connected to the veterans of Windsor at their monthly Coffee Hour hosted at LP Wilson Community Center. On November 21, I presented our Military Outdoors program to the veterans, and look forward to co-creating outings with them.
If you or someone you know are military, veterans and/or a family member to a military member or veteran, please reach out to me, Alycia Jenkins, via email: alycia.jenkins@sierraclub.org. Let’s talk about how to connect more veterans, active military, and military families to the outdoors.
Keep an eye out for more updates and check our Sierra Club Connecticut's Events & Outings for planned outings.
