Legislative Update

Winter 2021

Samantha Dynowski

How the Connecticut General Assembly session will unfold is always unknown, but the upcoming 2021 session is unlike any other. We don’t know if the procedures and rules will be the same, if it will be held online or in-person, how the public will be permitted to engage, and so many other things.

What we do know is that there is an urgent need to address the crises that we face. Climate change, recovery from COVID-19, racial injustice, and economic inequity are all pressing issues that require action. The legislative session is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 6 and conclude on Wednesday, June 9. Sierra Club Connecticut has been preparing for the 2021 legislative session and will advocate for a more just, equitable, and sustainable Connecticut. Join us on January 13 at 6:30 pm for a virtual training on Effective Citizen Lobbying in the 2021 Legislative Session where we will share updates on how the legislature will operate, how to build power to win, and some examples of Citizen Lobbying from our members. RSVP for Citizen Lobbying Training.

We also know that lawmakers need to hear from you. Our Sierra Club Connecticut volunteers and staff are planning ways to help your voice be heard on policies that protect people and the environment. We’ll keep you updated through this monthly e-newsletter; we’ll send action alerts when your advocacy is most needed.

Check our calendar for virtual lobbying meetings, including a transit focused event on Tuesday, February 2 at noon. To recognize the anniversary of Rosa Parks’ birthday, we’ll celebrate Transit Equity with a conversation with legislators from Connecticut’s Transportation Committee to discuss the need to improve, expand, and electrify public transit. This event is co-hosted by Sierra Club Connecticut, Transport Hartford, and the Connecticut Roundtable on Climate and Jobs. RSVP for Transit Issues in the 2021 CT Legislative Session.

None of this would be possible without the leadership of the dedicated volunteers who serve on our Legislative Committee. If you are interested in getting more involved, please contact Legislative Committee Chair, Art Helmus.
