Honk for Climate Action

December 2024
Since September 2023, West Hartford Sierra Club members and activists from other organizations have gathered on the first Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. for a “Honk for Climate Action!” demonstration at the corner of Main St. and Farmington Avenue in West Hartford. Drivers of cars, trucks, and buses have honked enthusiastically in response to our “Honk for Climate Action!,” “Honk for Climate Justice,” and other posters. Our goal is to raise awareness of the need for action to address climate change and inspire drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians to get involved in ways that are meaningful to them.
Some Saturdays have had a particular theme, such as “Make your next car an electric one,” or “Electrify your life,” or “Replace grassy areas with native plants.” We hope that these ideas will get people thinking and planning on actions where they live and work on a daily basis. Recently I spoke with a neighborhood resident who was walking by. He and his family had recently bought an electric lawn mower and had insulated their house for greater energy efficiency. I hope that he was encouraged in his efforts by connecting with others who are both serious and enthusiastic about taking action.
We welcome people from everywhere to join us. It’s very energizing for us all and will keep us going as we face very uncertain times for climate action. We’re out there today, December 7, or see you next on January 4, 11 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.!
