Earth Week Goes Virtual!

Samantha Dynowski

April 22 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. In-person events and activities may have been cancelled, but there are plenty of opportunities to make the climate better right from home during Earth Week 2020.

Here are three Connecticut climate online actions that you can take - beginning now - that will make a difference:

Insure Our Future Not Fossil Fuels

Connecticut’s insurance industry enables the fossil fuel industry by insuring fossil fuel projects as well as investing assets in fossil fuels. Join us in asking insurance companies to stop insuring fossil fuels, divest their assets from fossil fuels, and adopt investment and underwriting policies in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. A webinar on the issue will take place on April 23, and you can take action starting today by signing a petition to Connecticut insurance companies to stop funding fossil fuels.

Youth Climate Strike

Connecticut’s youth climate movement is gearing up for an online rally on April 24. Register here. Please join Connecticut’s youth climate movement in advocating for a moratorium on new fossil fuel infrastructure, increased energy efficiency and renewable energy, and climate change education.

Stop the Killingly Power Plant

You can help support efforts to stop the construction of a new 650 megawatt fossil-fuel fired power plant in Killingly. This dirty power plant has been opposed by Sierra Club for about four years. Connecticut has already built over 1400 megawatts of new fossil fuel power since 2016, and our state and the region does not need this additional power. Energy efficiency to reduce demand and new clean energy projects coming online, like offshore wind and solar, make this plant all the more unnecessary. A demonstration planned in Killingly for April 25 has been transformed into a letter writing campaign. Please get out your pen and paper and write a letter to Governor Lamont. See sample letters here.
