A Note from our Chapter Chair
We Need You!

Susan Eastwood

June 2024

Greetings to all of our members and supporters!

Did you know that Sierra Club is the largest and oldest environmental organization in the country, with 63 Chapters around the U.S.? In Connecticut, our Chapter has over 30,000 members and supporters, which is pretty awesome. Sierra Club’s strength is our volunteers, and there are so many ways to get involved! I like to think about what we could do with all of you active in the way that best fits your time and interests.

On the flip side, we do need our members to step up! We have four wonderful and dedicated staff, but their work is multiplied by many volunteers serving on committees, active in campaigns, contributing to the newsletter, joining us at events and outings, and taking actions to support strong environmental policy.

This month, as we approach the summer solstice, there are a number of ways you can add some Sierra Club to your summer.

On June 1, 11am-noon, there will be a Stop Project Maple rally in Coventry to protest Enbridge’s fracked gas pipeline expansion and the proposed Coventry Regulator Station. This campaign is ongoing and meets regularly. If you’d like to learn more, please contact Martha Klein.

Interested in EVs? National Drive Electric Week is in September, and it takes time to plan a successful event. Join our online Sierra Club CT Education & Activist Hour: Organizing an EV event on June 6, 5-6pm to find out how you can help plan an EV event in your area, or to get plugged in to our EV and clean transportation campaign.

Electric vehicle events help to raise awareness of the many benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, trucks, and motorcycles, and previous Connecticut events have featured buses, bikes, scooters, and lawn equipment. At these events, electric vehicle owners bring their vehicles, answer questions and share experiences with attendees. It’s a great way to help others understand the benefits of electric vehicles.

There will be a rally in support of a zero emissions retrofit of the Capitol Area System power plant on June 25.

We’ll be tabling at Juneteenth events in Hartford and New Haven. Let us know if you’d like to help meet and greet folks at our table, or stop by and say hello.

Our Quinnehtukqut newsletter will publish the Summer edition next on August 3. So be sure to check our events page for additional events and outings coming up in July. All our events can be seen here

We want to know what you would like to read about in the “Q”. There is a short survey, put together by our Communications Committee. Please take a minute to give us some feedback on how we can make our Chapter newsletter better!

Happy Solstice,

Susan
