Chapter Chair Update

September 2019
Hello and happy summer! I hope everyone is enjoying the weather and getting outside in our beautiful state of Connecticut. We here at Sierra Club Connecticut continue to be busy advocating for environmental justice, fighting the new fracked gas plant in Killingly, planning events and fundraisers, and ramping up our Outings program.

We’ve had some great events so far this summer. Our Executive Committee members and State Director have done educational events and talks, helping people understand the depth of the climate crisis and what we can do right here in Connecticut. We had a great fundraiser in Barkhamsted, touring an eco-friendly house and an amazing 29-acre property. I led my first outing at the Connecticut College Arboretum, which was fun and informative. We had a great tour of the grounds and learned a lot about native trees and plants. I encourage everyone to check it out!
We have some great things to look forward to this summer/fall as well. There is an Outings Leader Training in Massachusetts on August 17. We are looking to strengthen our chapter’s Outings Program and we need Outings leader volunteers. Find more information or sign up here.

Speaking of Outings, we have some great kayaking Outings coming up this month. You can choose from trips in Essex, New Preston, and Groton. Get out there and explore the waters of Connecticut. And don’t forget about National Drive Electric Week, happening from September 14-22. You can find more information about these and other events on the Events and Outings page of our website.

Finally, there is a Youth Climate Strike happening at the Capitol in Hartford on September 20th. We need everyone to mobilize and support our young people as they fight for a livable planet. This will also be the kick-off for a week of actions focused on different areas of social justice along with environmental. Keep an eye out for more details as they emerge.

I would, once again, like to thank our outstanding volunteers and members for their contributions to Sierra Club Connecticut. We could not do this without you, and we are making a difference! We’ve had some great legislative and conservation victories this year and it is thanks to your advocacy, time and effort. You’re the best! And a big thank you and congratulations to our State Director, Samantha Dynowski, who is celebrating her one-year anniversary on August 3rd. She has helped create something truly special here at Sierra Club Connecticut, and we are so appreciative of her effort and dedication. Great job Sam!

See you all next month.
