Killingly: Sierra Club Connecticut is actively opposing a brand new 650- megawatt fossil fuel power plant approved by the CT Siting Council in June 2019. An appeal to the Connecticut Supreme Court was filed by Not Another Power Plant; listen to the September 10 oral arguments here.  In October, DEEP held hearings on the permit for wastewater discharge; Sierra Club submitted these comments. On October 7, Sierra Club sent supplemental comments providing documentation of Northern Long Eared owl in Eversource’s proposed pipeline project area. End Gas Expansion/SupportBeneficial Electrification: Connecticut policies continue to expand the use of gas at a time when we must be making a transition from fossil fuels to zero-emission technologies. Sierra Club Connecticut is advocating to end ratepayer subsidies of gas pipelines, customer conversions, equipment and appliances at the Governor’s Council on Climate Change (GC3). Sierra Club filed these comments on the GC3 draft reports. 

On October 5, Sierra Club Connecticut filed these comments regarding the state’s energy efficiency programs to DEEP urging greater equity and a comprehensive approach to provide services including energy efficiency, weatherization, health and safety mitigation and electrification.

On October 27, Sierra Club hosted an online presentation featuring CT Coalition for Environmental Justice, Energy Justice Network, and Conservation Law Foundation to call for the closure of the MIRA trash incinerator in Hartford and to implement zero-waste policies. UCONN- Martha is collecting signatures on a petition to request DEEP hearing on permit for a lot of new methane boilers that are replacing old methane boilers.

TC/ Dominion Expansion: FERC docket number CP 20-48. The compression stations in Milford and Brookfield will be expanded to supply NY with more fracked gas. The pipeline will not be enlarged.

Distributed Generation Webinars: Sierra Club is hosting two webinars on why distributed energy is needed to ensure power in Connecticut is more sustainable, equitable and reliable. The first was held October 26 (recording here, password: a0iXVjt=). Second is on November 9 from 6:30 to 8 pm.

Mega Dam Resistance:  On September 21, the Sierra Club and its Chapters in New England, including Connecticut, joined with NAMRA and Indigenous leaders from across the region for a press conference opposing large impoundment Canadian hydropower and highlighting the impact of these mega dams on Indigenous people; recording is here. Local campaigns for 100% clean and renewable energy: Teams in five Connecticut towns (Hartford, Milford, Stamford, West Hartford and Windsor) are actively recruiting supporters to transition their communities to 100% clean and renewable energy.
